Today's Japanglish - 1

Being married to a Japanese is wondering whether she means "batter-fried shrimp", or, "butterflied shrimp".

Ditto, "corn" and "cone". Once, she asked, "Is there someplace we can get a cone? I want to eat a cone." I suggested Friendly's but it turned out she meant the kind of "cone" you get at a farm stand.

Cone on the Cob. Her favorite flavor is Rocky Road, however when she says asks for it, it sounds like, "lock and load".

Misunderstanding each other is our family sport.

Bill, re your Japanglish - my husband is Japanese, so all of these ring bells for me. When we were courting we were listening to some 40's dance tunes - he said that what he loved was relics (yes, - lyrics). Glabs - gloves. Crab for club. and on and on. It is a family pastime. Just gotta watch the vowels.

Nice little vignettes. Goes both ways, though. I speak enough Japanese to get a long, but make mistakes all the time - confusing the word 'kimochi' - comfortable with 'kimchi' national dish of Korea which is also popular in Japan.
